Does Science Make God Unnecessary?

For years, we have been told a familiar story: the more science discovers, the less room there is for God. The Big Bang explains the universe. Chemistry explains life. Evolution explains living things. Neuroscience explains the human mind. Keep science advancing long enough, and eventually God disappears.

But something very different happened. Modern science has not erased God. In fact, it has made the question of God harder to avoid.

The deeper we look into the universe, the cell, and ourselves, the more we encounter things that demand explanation: a universe with a beginning, physical laws finely balanced for life, DNA carrying coded information, cellular systems that must work together, and human beings capable of reason, morality, creativity, and spiritual awareness.

These are not simply gaps in scientific knowledge. Many of them are discoveries made possible by science itself. That is the irony. Science was supposed to make God unnecessary. Instead, it has revealed a universe that looks increasingly like the product of mind rather than accident.

The Universe Had a Beginning

Consider the universe itself. A century ago, many scientists thought the universe might have existed forever. That possibility appealed to those who wanted to avoid the question of creation. If matter had always existed, perhaps there would have been no need to ask where it came from.

Then the evidence changed. Astronomers discovered that galaxies are moving apart. Run that expansion backward, and the universe becomes smaller, hotter, and denser. In 1965, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson discovered the cosmic microwave background—the faint radiation left from the early universe. Together with cosmic expansion and other evidence, it established the Big Bang as the dominant scientific account of cosmic history.

Today scientists estimate that the universe is about 13.8 billion years old. In other words, the universe has a history. It has a beginning.

Think about what that means. Matter did not simply sit around forever. Neither did space. Time itself is tied to the history of the universe. So what caused it?

We cannot simply answer “the laws of physics” because the laws themselves are part of what needs to be explained. Laws describe how the universe behaves. They do not explain why there is a universe for those laws to govern.

Science can take us astonishingly close to the beginning. But it cannot make the beginning explain itself. If the physical universe began, then its ultimate cause cannot simply be another physical object inside the universe. Whatever brought nature into existence must in some sense transcend nature.

That sounds remarkably consistent with what Christians have been saying for centuries: the universe ultimately depends upon a Creator beyond it.

A Universe Fine-Tuned for Life

And the beginning is only the first puzzle.

Modern physics has also revealed that the universe is extraordinarily well suited for life. The fundamental constants and forces of nature fall within narrow ranges that permit stars, chemistry, planets, and living organisms to exist. Change some of them by the smallest amount, and you get a very different universe. You may get no stable atoms, no long-lived stars, no complex chemistry, and no life.

This is what physicists call fine-tuning. One striking example is the cosmological constant, which affects how rapidly the universe expands. Its life-permitting value appears to be fine-tuned to roughly one part in 10120.

That number is almost impossible to visualize. Imagine flipping a coin nearly 400 times and getting heads every time. The odds are roughly the same.

We can debate how fine-tuning should ultimately be explained. But we cannot simply pretend it is not there. Science discovered it. And that leaves us with a question that science itself cannot answer merely by taking more measurements:

Why does the universe have precisely the kind of mathematical structure that allows life to exist? Was it simply extraordinary luck? Or does calibration suggest something more?

Life Is More Than Chemistry

Now move from the largest thing we know—the universe—to something almost unimaginably small: a living cell. For generations, people could picture the first life as a primitive blob of material that somehow came together in an ancient pond.

Modern biology has made that picture much harder to maintain. Even the simplest cell must perform many jobs at once. It has to store information, reproduce, maintain a membrane, regulate what enters and leaves, obtain energy, and coordinate all of those activities.

Scientists trying to determine the minimum requirements for cellular life created what is often called a Minimal Cell. After systematically removing genes, the organism still required 473 genes and more than half a million DNA base pairs to survive. That is what passes for “simple” life.

And then there is DNA. DNA is not merely a complicated molecule. It carries instructions.

Groups of DNA bases define individual amino acids, and the cell links those amino acids together in the correct sequence to make proteins. Those proteins then fold into particular three-dimensional shapes so they can perform specific jobs.

The cell looks less like a puddle of chemicals and more like a microscopic manufacturing system. It contains information, machinery, transport systems, assembly processes, error correction, and energy management—all working together.

That raises an obvious question: Where did the information come from? Chemistry can explain why molecules attract or repel one another. But a chemical bond is not an instruction.

In our ordinary experience, functional information comes from intelligence. Computer code comes from programmers. Books come from authors. Messages come from minds. Why should the coded information at the heart of life be the one great exception?

At this point someone usually says, “Evolution.” But evolution does not solve the origin-of-life problem.

Natural selection cannot begin until something already exists that can reproduce and pass information to the next generation. Before evolution can modify life, life must first exist.

And first life had to solve several problems together.

DNA needs proteins to be copied and used. Proteins depend upon instructions in DNA. Producing those proteins requires cellular machinery. That machinery requires energy. Metabolism provides energy, but metabolism itself depends heavily on enzymes—and enzymes are proteins encoded by genetic information.

This is not simply a lucky molecule. It is an integrated system.

That does not mean we should say, “Science does not know, therefore God.” It means we should ask what kind of cause is capable of producing information, coordination, and function from the simple chemicals available on ancient Earth.

Intelligence is at least a legitimate candidate because intelligence is something we already know can produce all three.

And Then There Is Us

Then there is the most remarkable thing nature has produced: Us.

Human beings do more than survive and reproduce. We discover mathematics. We compose symphonies. We create art. We develop moral codes. We ask whether something is true rather than merely useful. We sacrifice ourselves for strangers. We seek justice. We wonder why we exist. We pray. We worship. We search for meaning.

Science can study the neurons firing while you think about justice. But the electrical activity is not justice.

Science can measure hormones associated with love. But the hormone is not love.

A brain scan can show what happens while you are thinking. It does not tell us why there is a conscious you experiencing the thought.

Science can tell us an astonishing amount about our biological machinery while leaving unanswered some of the deepest questions about what it means to be human.

Naturalism offers one answer: ultimately, everything about us arose from blind physical processes. Christianity offers another.

The universe is rational because it came from Mind. Life contains information because it was intended. Human beings possess reason, morality, creativity, love, and spiritual awareness because we are more than complicated machines. We were created in the image of God.

So, Does Science Make God Unnecessary?

No! Modern cosmology revealed a universe with a beginning. Physics revealed extraordinary fine-tuning. Molecular biology revealed coded information and cellular machinery far beyond what earlier generations imagined.

The study of human beings revealed brains of astonishing complexity while leaving consciousness, reason, morality, love, and meaning stubbornly resistant to being reduced to chemistry alone.

None of this proves God in the way a laboratory experiment proves the boiling point of water. But neither does science point us toward the simple conclusion that God has become unnecessary.

Quite the opposite. Science is extraordinarily good at telling us how the machinery of nature works. But discovering the machinery does not eliminate the Engineer.

Knowing how a violin produces sound does not explain why the music was written. Understanding how an automobile engine runs does not explain why the automobile was designed and built.

In the same way, explaining processes within nature does not explain why nature exists at all.

The more deeply we investigate the universe, the harder it becomes to dismiss its rational order as meaningless accident. The more we learn about the cell, the harder it becomes to treat life as mere chemistry. And the more we learn about ourselves, the harder it becomes to believe that consciousness, reason, morality, love, and our hunger for meaning are nothing more than atoms in motion.

That is the provocative possibility modern science has placed before us.

Science did not make God unnecessary. When we follow the evidence far enough, it appears to be pointing beyond nature—to intelligence, purpose, and ultimately to a Creator.
